Linguistic Intelligence

Cook or do DIY projects which require following instructions in a sequence.

Play a game where you each create a sequence of numbers which have a hidden pattern and have the others figure out the pattern.

Play mental arithmetic games.

Play chess ( which also stimulates spatial intelligence) and draughts (checkers), Noughts and Crosses( Tic Tac Toe) and other strategy games like Battleships, Go or Mancala or board games like Cluedo.

Play card games like Hearts or Rummy — they involve strategies and patterns.

Predict what will happen during a TV film or play and see who is right.

Visit the nearest Science and Natural History Museums.

Discuss and list the pro’s and con’s of potential family holidays or major outings.

Discuss the pros and cons of the weeks main issue.

Play 20 Questions — where you think of an object and she has 20 questions to find the object by asking questions that rapidly narrow down the possibilities. For example an animal category can be rapidly narrowed down by asking " Human or Animal? Living or dead? Male or Female?" etc.

Look for occasions where you can draw conclusions from a TV programme — or debate an issue like using animals in medical experiments using the FAN formula. i.e. F = For, A = Against and N = Now what? The N is especially important — because it reminds you that there are few issues where a really fair debate will not result in a slightly modified view.

Encourage her to work out change at the shops.

Invent a code and write a message in it — then challenge the family to solve it.

Challenge him to persuade you that it is time to increase his pocket money or how he should get a wanted toy for a birthday with a well reasoned argument.

Play Fizz-Buzz. You start counting from 1 and whenever anyone reaches 3 or a multiple of three ( 6, 9 12 etc.) they replace the number with Fizz. When they reach 5 or a multiple of 5 they must substitute that number with Buzz. !5 and 30 will be Fizz Buzz.

Ask prompting questions like " What would happen as a result of that?" and "What assumptions are we making that may not be true?"
